MerchantPro is one of the longest-running ecommerce platforms in Romania, with flexible design editing, strong local integrations and no commission on sales. Growing stores usually start asking questions when they hit a plan’s annual revenue limit, want to expand into several markets or need marketing tools beyond what the platform includes. This comparison shows, criterion by criterion, when MerchantPro is still the right choice and when Shopify pays off.

In short: MerchantPro or Shopify?

MerchantPro is the better fit for a store focused on Romania and nearby markets that wants local integrations, ERP connections and Romanian support in one subscription. Shopify pays off when international growth, a large app ecosystem and advanced lifecycle marketing become priorities. On subscription price alone, MerchantPro is often cheaper; Shopify’s case is built on reach and flexibility, not on the monthly fee.

Stay on MerchantPro if…

  • Most of your revenue comes from Romania, Bulgaria or eMAG Marketplace.
  • Your store relies on one of MerchantPro’s ERP integrations and it works well.
  • You value Romanian-language support and a dedicated account manager.
  • Your annual revenue sits comfortably within your plan’s limit.
  • Your current design and conversion rate already meet your goals.

Move to Shopify if…

  • You plan to sell in many countries, currencies and languages from one store.
  • You are approaching the 2 million EUR annual revenue limit of MerchantPro’s Enterprise plan.
  • Email and SMS (for example with Klaviyo) are becoming a main revenue channel.
  • You need apps or integrations that only exist in a global ecosystem.
  • You want access to a large pool of developers and agencies for custom work.

MerchantPro says more than 5,000 clients have used it over the years. The platform includes a site builder with CSS and HTML editing, more than 20 ERP integrations, eMAG Marketplace integration, B2B and cross-border tools, multi-store sync and AI features such as semantic search and a chatbot. It also operates localized versions in markets such as Bulgaria, Hungary and Italy.

MerchantPro vs Shopify: comparison table

Both are hosted SaaS platforms; the main differences are how plans scale (revenue limits on MerchantPro, feature tiers on Shopify) and how Romanian integrations are delivered. MerchantPro prices exclude VAT; Shopify prices are as listed on its Romanian pricing page. Data checked October 2026.

How much does MerchantPro cost compared to Shopify?

On subscription alone, MerchantPro is usually cheaper. Its plans are tied to annual revenue: Premium covers up to 100,000 EUR a year, VIP up to 500,000 EUR and Enterprise up to 2 million EUR (MerchantPro). Shopify’s plan price does not depend on revenue: in Romania, Basic costs 139 lei, Grow 369 lei and Advanced 1,940 lei a month, while Plus starts at 2,100 EUR a month (Shopify).

Here is how the monthly subscription compares at different revenue levels, on monthly billing:

Annual revenue

MerchantPro plan (EUR/month, excl. VAT)

Typical Shopify plan (RON/month)

Up to 100,000 EUR

Premium, 34.99

Basic 139 or Grow 369

100,000 to 500,000 EUR

VIP, 59.99

Grow, 369

500,000 EUR to 2 million EUR

Enterprise, from 134.99

Grow 369 or Advanced 1,940

Over 2 million EUR

Not publicly listed

Advanced 1,940 or Plus from 2,100 EUR

The subscription is only part of the cost. On Shopify, add card processing fees (from 1.9% + 1.25 lei on Basic down to 1.3% + 1.25 lei on Plus with Shopify Payments) and the apps that replace MerchantPro’s built-in features, such as e-Factura, AWB and an eMAG connector. On MerchantPro, some integrations and features are paid apps with their own monthly fee, payment processor fees still apply, and custom development is quoted separately. Annual billing lowers the price on both: MerchantPro’s VIP drops to 52.79 EUR a month, and Shopify’s Basic, Grow and Advanced drop to 125, 329 and 1,750 lei a month. New Shopify stores can also start with a 3-day free trial, then pay 5 lei a month for the first 3 months.

The honest takeaway: if cost is your main reason to move, MerchantPro will usually win. Moving to Shopify makes sense when it unlocks revenue, through new markets, better conversion or stronger retention, that outweighs the higher fees.

Which Romanian integrations does each support?

Both cover what a Romanian store needs; MerchantPro includes most of it in the platform, while Shopify relies on apps from the Shopify App Store.

Invoicing and ERP. MerchantPro integrates with invoicing and stock management systems, generates invoices automatically and lists more than 20 ERP integrations from the VIP plan (MerchantPro). On Shopify, apps such as eFactura SPV submit e-Factura invoices to ANAF and connect to SmartBill, Oblio and FGO; ERP connections usually need a connector app or custom integration.

Couriers and AWB. MerchantPro integrates with courier services, generates AWBs automatically and offers a delivery service with no minimum volume. On Shopify, apps such as Fluxsales issue AWBs and invoices for FAN Courier, Cargus, Oblio and SmartBill.

Payments. MerchantPro comes pre-integrated with online and offline payment methods, plus a virtual wallet from VIP. Shopify Payments works for Romanian businesses, with cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay, and local gateways can also be connected.

eMAG Marketplace. MerchantPro offers a native eMAG integration. On Shopify, eMAG runs through third-party or custom-built connectors, for example from ECOSIRE, so plan for setup time and cost.

Which is better for SEO and site speed?

Neither platform wins on SEO by default; results depend on the theme, content and technical setup. MerchantPro includes SEO-friendly URLs, onsite SEO settings, editable meta data and custom 301 redirects, and it runs on HTTP/2 from the Premium plan (MerchantPro). Shopify also covers the technical basics out of the box and lets developers fine-tune themes, structured data and redirects.

For speed, test your own store rather than relying on platform claims. Run your top category and product pages through Google PageSpeed Insights, and compare them with a well-built Shopify store in your niche.

The bigger SEO risk is the migration itself. Without a complete URL map and 301 redirects, rankings can drop, which is why a migration without losing organic traffic starts with SEO, not design.

How do they compare on marketing and retention?

MerchantPro includes a solid set of built-in marketing tools and connects natively to theMarketer; Shopify connects to dedicated platforms like Klaviyo for deeper lifecycle marketing. MerchantPro offers abandoned cart recovery, complex promotions, cross-sell in cart, affiliate programs, review collection, back-in-stock alerts and SMS notifications, with loyalty points and conversion tools from the VIP plan (MerchantPro).

On Shopify, Klaviyo syncs orders, browsing behavior and product data, so you can build segmented flows such as welcome series, browse abandonment, post-purchase and win-back, and run email and SMS from one place. For brands where repeat purchases drive profit, Klaviyo retention automations often matter more than any single platform feature.

As a Shopify Plus Partner and Klaviyo Master Platinum agency, we often see stores outgrow built-in tools once email becomes a main revenue channel.

Which scales better for B2B and international?

Both support B2B and cross-border selling; Shopify reaches further globally, while MerchantPro is strong in Romania and nearby markets. MerchantPro offers a dedicated B2B suite, customer groups, business data validation at checkout, multi-store sync, OSS VAT for EU sales and up to 10 storefront languages on Enterprise (MerchantPro). The platform itself runs localized versions in countries such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy and Spain.

Shopify added native B2B to its Basic, Grow and Advanced plans in April 2026, with up to 3 catalogs, company profiles, payment terms and volume pricing (eSEOspace). For international growth, one Shopify store can serve several markets with local currencies, languages and domains, and Shopify Plus adds expansion stores and full checkout customization. The key limit to watch on MerchantPro is revenue: Enterprise covers up to 2 million EUR a year, and pricing above that is not publicly listed.

How easy is it to take your data with you?

On MerchantPro, fairly easy on paid plans: products and customers can be exported as CSV or Excel files from the Premium plan up, and there is no long-term contract (MerchantPro). The free Basic plan does not include data export. If you cancel during a prepaid period, the unused part is not refunded, so time your move around your renewal date.

Shopify lets you export products, customers and orders as CSV files from the admin, on every plan. Before any migration, also export what CSV files often miss: order history, product reviews, blog posts, URL structure and any data held in apps or your ERP.

When it makes sense to stay on MerchantPro

Stay on MerchantPro if the platform is not what limits your growth. A migration costs time, money and focus, and it only pays off when it solves a real problem.

MerchantPro is likely still the right choice if your sales are concentrated in Romania and eMAG, your operations depend on a working ERP integration, and your annual revenue fits within your plan. It also makes sense if your team relies on Romanian support and your traffic and conversion rate are healthy.

If growth has stalled, look at the bottleneck first. Weak ads, product pages or email strategy will follow you to any platform.

How migrating from MerchantPro to Shopify works

A MerchantPro to Shopify migration follows six steps, with SEO protection running through all of them. The timeline depends on catalog size, ERP and integrations, and design scope.

  1. Audit. We review your catalog, traffic, top-ranking URLs, ERP and integrations, and agree on what must work on day one.
  2. Data export. Products, customers and orders are exported from MerchantPro as CSV or Excel, along with pages, blog posts and reviews.
  3. Store build. We set up the Shopify theme, design, checkout and Romanian integrations: e-Factura, couriers, payments, eMAG and, where needed, your ERP.
  4. SEO mapping. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new equivalent, and titles, meta descriptions and structured data are carried over.
  5. Testing. Orders, invoices, AWBs, ERP sync, emails and redirects are tested end to end before launch.
  6. Launch and monitoring. We switch the domain, monitor rankings and crawl errors in Google Search Console, and fix issues in the first weeks.

Our Shopify development team handles the full process of migrating from MerchantPro to Shopify, from audit to post-launch monitoring.

MerchantPro vs Shopify: FAQ

Is MerchantPro better than Shopify?

P

It depends on your goals. MerchantPro is better for stores focused on Romania and nearby markets that want local integrations, ERP connections and Romanian support at a lower subscription cost. Shopify is better for brands expanding internationally or relying on advanced email marketing and a global app ecosystem. Choose the one that removes your current growth bottleneck.

How much does migrating from MerchantPro to Shopify cost?

P

It depends on catalog size, integrations and design scope. A store keeping a standard theme and a few integrations costs far less than a custom design with ERP sync, eMAG and several markets. The fastest way to get a real number is a platform audit, which maps exactly what needs to move.

Will I lose Google rankings if I migrate?

P

Not if the migration is done properly. Rankings drop when old URLs break. A complete 301 redirect map, preserved meta data and monitoring in Google Search Console after launch protect your organic traffic. Small fluctuations in the first weeks are normal while Google recrawls the store.

Can I keep my invoicing and courier integrations?

P

Yes, in most cases. Shopify apps cover e-Factura submission to ANAF, sync with SmartBill, Oblio and FGO, and AWB generation for couriers such as FAN Courier and Cargus. ERP integrations need a closer look, since the connector depends on your ERP. We test every flow before launch.

Does MerchantPro charge a commission on sales?

P

No. MerchantPro charges no commission on sales. Instead, each plan has an annual revenue limit: 100,000 EUR on Premium, 500,000 EUR on VIP and 2 million EUR on Enterprise. When your revenue passes the limit, you move to the next plan.

Can I sell on eMAG from Shopify?

P

Yes, but not natively. eMAG runs through third-party or custom connectors that sync products, stock, prices and orders. MerchantPro includes a native eMAG integration, so if eMAG is your main channel, factor the connector cost into your decision.

Does Shopify Payments work in Romania?

P

Yes. Businesses based in Romania can use Shopify Payments to accept cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay, with payouts every 3 business days. Card rates start at 1.9% + 1.25 lei on Basic and drop to 1.3% + 1.25 lei on Plus. It works for online sales, but not yet for in-person sales with Shopify POS in Romania.
