In short: AvantiCart or Shopify?

AvantiCart is a good fit for a Romanian retailer that wants one local team to build, host and develop the store, with invoicing, couriers, ERP and the in-store cash register in one system. Shopify pays off when you want a platform cost that does not grow with your sales, a global app ecosystem, and native tools for email, SMS and international growth. The real comparison is not the monthly fee: it is how each cost model scales as revenue grows, and who controls your roadmap.

Stay on AvantiCart if…

  • Your online and physical stores run on one stock and one cash register system, and that setup works well.
  • You use the development hours included in your contract and the AvantiCart team delivers what you ask for on time.
  • You sell mostly in Romania and the local invoicing, AWB and marketplace modules cover your operations.
  • Your ERP or WMS integration is complex and already stable.
  • You prefer one supplier for platform, hosting and development.

Move to Shopify if…

  • The sales commission has become one of your largest platform costs as revenue grew.
  • New features wait in one team’s backlog and you want to launch them in days, through apps or the developers you choose.
  • Email and SMS (for example with Klaviyo) are becoming a main revenue channel.
  • You plan to sell in several countries with local currencies, languages, domains and checkout.
  • You want a platform any agency or developer can work on, so you are not tied to a single supplier.

What is AvantiCart?

AvantiCart is a proprietary ecommerce platform built in Romania by BMR SOFT SRL, a software company based in Cluj-Napoca. It has been in development since 2007 and available to other merchants since 2010. It is neither open source nor a self-service SaaS: the AvantiCart team designs the store, hosts it, migrates your data and keeps developing it under a monthly contract.

The platform is built around Romanian retail operations. Its published feature list includes an invoicing module, one-click AWB generation, ERP and WMS integration, an eMAG Marketplace module, a B2B module with prices by customer group, multi-store, multiple languages and currencies, and an in-store interface with cash register and barcode support. Packages are tiered by maximum monthly sales and features differ by package, so check which modules your contract includes.

AvantiCart focuses on software only. It states that it does not offer SEO, Google Ads or Facebook Ads services, so marketing stays with your team or another partner.

AvantiCart vs Shopify: comparison table

How much does AvantiCart cost compared to Shopify?

The two platforms charge in different ways. AvantiCart charges a setup fee, a fixed monthly fee and a percentage commission on sales, so your platform cost grows with revenue. Shopify charges a fixed monthly plan whose price does not depend on revenue, plus payment and app costs.

AvantiCart does not publish its current prices; you get them in a quote. Its FAQ explains the logic: the fixed part covers servers, tools and staff, and the commission is split in two. Half becomes guaranteed development hours for your store at 45 EUR + VAT per hour, which you can use for design changes, new features, A/B tests or integrations. The other half funds platform development and profit, and every store gets upgrades to the latest version at no extra cost. AvantiCart states there is no minimum contract period and no other cost after launch beyond the monthly subscription.

Shopify’s core plans cost 39 USD (Basic), 105 USD (Grow) and 399 USD (Advanced) a month on monthly billing, while Plus starts at 2,300 USD a month on a 3-year term or 2,500 USD on a 1-year term. These are US prices; your Shopify admin shows the price for your country, which can differ. On top of the plan, budget for paid apps, a theme, development work and payment processing. Shopify Payments is available to businesses in Romania for online payments; with a third-party gateway, Shopify adds a transaction fee.

Here is what to compare line by line:

Cost line AvantiCart Shopify
Setup One-time setup fee covering design, migration and consultancy Theme and build by your agency or team; no platform setup fee
Monthly platform fee Fixed fee + percentage of sales Fixed plan price, independent of revenue (Plus adds a variable fee for larger businesses)
Development Half of the commission, as guaranteed hours at 45 EUR + VAT Paid separately to an agency, freelancer or in-house team
Hosting and updates Included Included
New features Built by AvantiCart from your hours or quoted separately Apps (often a monthly fee) or custom development
Payments Fees from your payment provider Shopify Payments rates, or gateway fees plus Shopify’s transaction fee

The honest takeaway: run the numbers on your own revenue. Ask AvantiCart for your fixed fee and commission rate, then calculate the monthly cost at today’s sales and at the revenue you plan for the next 2 to 3 years. Compare it with a Shopify plan plus your real app, development and payment costs. If you use every included development hour and the team delivers, the bundled price can be good value; if the commission keeps rising while your roadmap stays the same, a fixed platform cost gives you more predictable margins.

Who handles hosting, security and updates?

On both platforms, you do not run servers. AvantiCart hosts every store on its own cloud infrastructure with 24/7 monitoring and rolls out platform upgrades to all stores. Shopify hosts, secures and updates the platform for every merchant, and is certified Level 1 PCI DSS compliant.

The difference is scale and dependency. AvantiCart is a focused Romanian team, so the speed of fixes and new features depends on that team’s capacity and on the development hours in your contract. Shopify serves millions of stores worldwide, ships platform updates to all of them, and leaves theme code and app choices to your team or agency.

Before deciding, ask AvantiCart about uptime history, backup policy, how card payments are processed, and what happens to your store and data if the contract ends.

Which is better for SEO and site speed?

Neither platform wins on SEO by default; results depend on content, technical setup and site speed. AvantiCart presents its stores as search engine friendly, with one responsive site and no separate mobile subdomain, and technical SEO changes go through the AvantiCart team and your development hours. Shopify covers the technical basics out of the box (sitemap, canonical tags, editable titles and meta descriptions, redirects) and lets developers fine-tune themes and structured data.

One Shopify detail matters for migrations: URLs use fixed prefixes such as /products/ and /collections/, so almost every AvantiCart URL will change. Without a complete URL map and 301 redirects, rankings can drop, which is why a migration without losing organic traffic starts with SEO, not design.

For speed, test your own store rather than relying on platform claims. Run your top category and product pages through Google PageSpeed Insights and compare them with well-built Shopify stores in your niche.

How do they compare on marketing and retention?

The difference is how much of your retention stack works without custom development. On Shopify, Klaviyo connects through a native integration and syncs orders, browsing behavior, products and customers without server work. That data powers segmented flows such as welcome series, browse abandonment, abandoned cart, post-purchase and win-back, with email and SMS run from one place.

On AvantiCart, we could not find a published Klaviyo plugin. Its documented email plugins connect to local Romanian email platforms, and the platform has its own abandoned cart module, time-limited vouchers, a unique voucher for newsletter signups and promotions such as N + 1 free. Connecting Klaviyo would mean a build against Klaviyo’s API, paid from your development hours and maintained by the AvantiCart team.

As a Shopify Plus Partner and Klaviyo Master Platinum agency, we see the same pattern often: the less time a team spends keeping integrations alive, the more time it spends improving the flows that drive predictable revenue.

Which scales better for B2B and international?

Both can run B2B and multi-language stores; AvantiCart covers Romanian operations in one system, while Shopify gives more out of the box for selling abroad. AvantiCart offers a B2B module with prices by customer group, multi-store, multiple languages and currencies, and a dropshipping module, depending on your package.

Shopify added native B2B to its Basic, Grow and Advanced plans in April 2026, with up to 3 catalogs, company profiles, payment terms and volume pricing; Plus adds unlimited B2B catalogs and up to 9 expansion stores. With Markets you sell in several countries from one store, with local currencies, languages and domains, and the Advanced plan lets you customize the theme, checkout and customer account pages for each market.

Local operations are where AvantiCart is strongest. On Shopify, Romanian invoicing (including e-Factura), AWB generation with local couriers and eMAG listings run through third-party apps, so test each one against your order volume before you move. Also note that Shopify Payments in Romania covers online payments but not in-person payments with Shopify POS, which matters if you run physical shops.

How easy is it to take your data with you?

On Shopify, you can export products, customers and orders as CSV files from the admin, on every plan. On AvantiCart, the platform is proprietary and hosted by the provider, so a full export depends on what the AvantiCart team delivers.

Ask early, before you give notice, for an export of products with variants and images, customers, order history, reviews, blog posts and the complete list of URLs. Since AvantiCart states there is no minimum contract period, plan the export and the new store launch together, so you are never without a working store.

When it makes sense to stay on AvantiCart

Stay on AvantiCart if the platform is not what limits your growth. A migration costs time, money and focus, and it only pays off when it solves a real problem.

AvantiCart is likely still the right choice if your online and physical stores share one stock and cash register system that works, you sell mainly in Romania, your ERP integration is stable, and the commission at your planned revenue stays reasonable compared with a full Shopify setup. It also makes sense if you use your development hours every month and the team delivers.

If growth has stalled, look at the bottleneck first. Weak ads, product pages or email strategy will follow you to any platform.

How migrating from AvantiCart to Shopify works

An AvantiCart to Shopify migration follows six steps, with SEO protection running through all of them. The timeline depends on catalog size, integrations (ERP, invoicing, couriers, cash register, marketplaces) and design scope.

  1. Audit. We review your catalog, traffic, top-ranking URLs, the AvantiCart modules you use and every integration, and agree on what must work on day one.
  2. Data export. Products, customers and orders are exported in coordination with the AvantiCart team, along with content pages, blog posts and reviews.
  3. Store build. We set up the Shopify theme, design, checkout, the apps that replace AvantiCart modules (invoicing, AWB, marketplace), and integrations such as Klaviyo, payments and, where needed, your ERP.
  4. SEO mapping. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new equivalent, and titles, meta descriptions and structured data are carried over.
  5. Testing. Orders, payments, invoices, AWBs, emails, integrations and redirects are tested end to end before launch.
  6. Launch and monitoring. We switch the domain, monitor rankings and crawl errors in Google Search Console, and fix issues in the first weeks.

Our Shopify development team handles the full process of migrating from AvantiCart to Shopify, from audit to post-launch monitoring.

AvantiCart vs Shopify: FAQ

Is AvantiCart better than Shopify?

P

It depends on your goals. AvantiCart is better for Romanian retailers that want one local supplier for platform, hosting and development, with online and in-store operations in one system. Shopify is better for brands that want a fixed platform cost, a global app ecosystem and room to grow internationally. Choose the one that removes your current growth bottleneck.

Does AvantiCart take a commission on sales?

P

Yes. AvantiCart’s monthly subscription has a fixed part and a percentage of sales. According to AvantiCart, half of that commission becomes guaranteed development hours for your store at 45 EUR + VAT per hour, and the other half funds platform development.

How much does migrating from AvantiCart to Shopify cost?

P

It depends on catalog size, the integrations you need to replace (ERP, invoicing, couriers, cash register, marketplaces) and design scope. We share a clear estimate after the audit, with no surprises on the invoice.

Will I lose Google rankings if I migrate?

P

Not if the migration is planned around SEO. Every old URL needs a 301 redirect to its new equivalent, because Shopify uses fixed URL prefixes. We then monitor rankings and crawl errors in Google Search Console after launch.

Can I use Romanian invoicing, couriers and eMAG on Shopify?

P

Yes, through third-party apps for invoicing (including e-Factura), AWB generation and marketplace listings. Test each app with your real order volume before launch, since these replace modules that are built into AvantiCart.

Can I keep selling in my physical shop?

P

Plan this carefully. Shopify Payments in Romania covers online payments but not in-person payments with Shopify POS, and Romanian cash register rules apply. If physical retail is a large share of your sales, we map it in the audit before recommending a move.

Can I use Klaviyo on Shopify?

P

Yes. Klaviyo connects to Shopify through a native integration that syncs orders, browsing behavior and product data, so you can run email and SMS flows from day one.
