The Project

Bitters & Bottles is a spirits and alcohol retailer with a 12-year legacy and a decade-long presence on the Shopify platform. The project focus was a technical migration from the legacy “Superstore” theme by Out of the Sandbox to the modern “Essentials” theme by Noord. The goal was to improve site performance and technical stability while simultaneously implementing a branding refresh without disrupting ongoing operations.

Challenge

The scope of work centered on a full-scale technical transition and optimization of the Shopify storefront. Key deliverables included:

  • Theme Migration: Full transition to the Noord Essentials theme.
  • Custom Liquid Reconstruction: Replacing Shogun-built pages with native Shopify Liquid code to reduce technical debt and improve speed.
  • App Optimization: A thorough audit and reconfiguration of existing apps to ensure full compatibility with the new theme architecture.
  • Brand Refresh Implementation: Integration of updated design assets, including new typography, color palettes, and optimized logos..

Vertical / Geography

  • Vertical: Spirits and Alcohol Retail.
  • Geography: Based in and targeting the USA market.

The Process

The project followed a structured, two milestone-based execution to manage the transition efficiently:

Phase 1: Shopify Theme Transition & Brand Alignment

This phase focused on building the foundational store environment and aligning the technical architecture with the client’s brand refresh.

  • Staging Environment Setup: To ensure zero disruption to live sales, all work was performed in a controlled staging environment.
  • Brand Kit Integration: The team integrated the new visual identity provided by the client’s designer, including typography, specific color hex codes, and optimized logo assets across all storefront touchpoints.
  • Navigation & UI Reconstruction: We rebuilt the header and footer structures from the ground up. This included configuring complex navigation menus and optimizing the user interface for a mobile-first experience, ensuring high performance on all device types.
  • Visual Replication: The layout of the existing store was mapped onto the Noord Essentials theme settings to maintain a familiar user journey for returning customers while leveraging the new theme’s native speed and capabilities.

Phase 2: App Review, Implementation & Technical Optimization

Once the visual foundation was approved, the focus shifted to the store’s functional layer and the removal of technical debt.

  • Comprehensive App Audit: We conducted a thorough review of the existing app stack (including Wholesale Lock, Min Maxify, and Subscriptions). Redundant or conflicting scripts were identified for removal to improve site loading times.
  • Native Liquid Reconstruction: A critical component of this phase was the migration away from the Shogun page builder.
  • Loyalty & Local Delivery Setup: The team managed the integration of Marsello for the brand’s loyalty program and meticulously configured the Nash app to support the client’s local delivery logistics.
  • Legacy Code Cleanup: We performed a “deep clean” of the theme’s codebase, removing leftover snippets from old applications to ensure the new theme remained lean and high-performing.

Shopify Store Design

The design strategy focused on Visual Replication and UX Enhancements. Rather than a complete redesign of the user journey, the objective was to map the existing UX onto the “Essentials” theme framework. Key design focus areas included:

  • Visual Continuity: Replicating the existing layout while integrating updated Illustrator assets provided by the client’s designer.
  • Mobile-First Optimization: Adjusting banner dimensions and icon sizes to ensure a smooth responsive experience.
  • Navigation Architecture: De-cluttering and rebuilding the header and footer structures for more intuitive browsing.

Website Features & App Integrations

To support the client’s specific business model, several high-impact features and integrations were managed:

  • Local Delivery: Integration and configuration of the Nash app to support local logistics.
  • Loyalty & Engagement: Transitioning to Marsello to manage the brand’s rewards program, ensuring the signature “Points Auction” feature remained a core driver of customer engagement and loyalty.
  • Native Rebuilds: Transitioning the Clubs and Rewards pages from third-party builders to native Shopify sectionsto optimize loading times and maintainability.
  • Operational Apps: Management of various integrations including Wholesale Lock, Min Maxify, and subscription functionalities.

Conclusion

The project successfully transitioned Bitters & Bottles to a high-performance Shopify environment. By replacing heavy third-party page builders with native code and optimizing the app stack, the store now benefits from improved performance and a refreshed brand identity. The migration ensures the technical infrastructure is robust enough to support the brand’s next decade of growth while maintaining the unique features their customers value.
